Piecing with grids is a very easy technique to use when piecing those 2″ squares. Of course you could use any size square with this technique.
Piecing with Grids
This video was inspired by a demonstration given at my local quilt guild, Piecemakers of Idaho. The technique is from Ten Sisters who also sell pre-made grids. They do provide a lot of patterns to use with the grids. My video was on how to create your own grid. Below is a quick review but watch the video for a more in-depth explanation and example.
This is an easy piecing method when you want to make a quilt using squares. You’ll be amazed at how quick it is to do.
Supplies Needed
- Pellon P44f (or other one-sided fusible lightweight interfacing)
- Marking tool
- Ruler
- Glue stick
- Iron
- Fabric cut 1/2″ bigger than finish size wanted
Make Grid
Step 1: Draw a grid the size of your cut squares. Watch the video for an explanation on the math to determine the size of your grid.
Step 2: Using a glue stick, temporarily tack-down fabric squares onto grid.
Step 3: Iron fabric onto grid activating the fusible stabilizer.

Step 4: Fold first row over matching right sides together. Make sure grid line is centered on fold and sew 1/4″ from fold. Do this with all rows but not the columns.
Step 5: Clip stabilizer on column grid line to the seam.
Step 6: Iron each column in opposite directions so it will nest together.
Step 7: Sew columns.
Step 8: Iron.
I hope you enjoy the video and that you find this technique as easy as I do.
